Compounded is not the same as generic

A generic drug is an FDA-approved drug that must meet applicable approval requirements, including therapeutic-equivalence requirements where relevant. A compounded drug is not FDA approved, meaning FDA does not review its safety, effectiveness, or quality before marketing. FDA explains these distinctions in its compounding questions and answers.
