Peptides seem to mean everything online. What are they, really?

I keep seeing the word peptide in medicine, fitness, skincare, and wellness content. What does it actually mean?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids. Some peptide-based medicines are well studied and FDA-approved for specific uses, while many products promoted online have far less evidence. A peptide's name alone does not establish that a product is safe, effective, or appropriate for any particular goal. This community shares general education, not personal medical advice.

The distinction between a molecule, a product, and a marketing claim is the clearest starting point I have found. It makes the rest of the research easier to read.
